In 2009, Maren and Heidi Shalek co-founded The Training Room, a boutique-style fitness studio with two locations in Somerville. Since then, Maren’s commitment to both her clients and the community has never wavered nor has her competitive spirit to challenge herself. As a personal trainer and fitness instructor, she strives to find the most effective method of training with limited time. Maren constantly challenges her clients with one basic principle: build a solid base through proper movement prior to loading weight. Simply stated: “You wouldn’t build a house without a solid foundation, so why treat your body any differently.” A Division I recruited athlete and graduate of Boston University, Maren has taught and coached in the fitness and athletic fields for 15 years. She began her career as a tennis coach and private instructor prior to obtaining her personal training certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, followed by her SFG Level 1 Kettlebell Certification through StrongFirst. A former endurance runner and avid cyclist, she has completed 22 marathons, including the Boston and New York marathons, as well as the venerable South African Comrades ultramarathon, running the 56-mile course during an uphill year. She now combines her passion for travel with her readiness to test her fitness limits by cycling up mountains. She biked the French and Spanish Pyrenees in 2014, and fulfilled her dream of cycling the mountains of the Tour de France in 2016 summiting seven passes.
